Ready for a free walk!!!

Sitting in my room I hate to see the world running after some piece of papers to make few exchanges which people say give them contentment. It hurts to see people shadowing the real truth without even being ignorant. I feel this contentment is nothing but an expiation. The atonement of happiness they say is a myth. Deep down inside they know that, but are afraid of their survival in this merciless and callous world where materialism is the order of the day. Let them run for the ‘so called’ indispensable money.

This cresomania is eventually killing the real sensitive emotions and feeling of the the true self. I see my neighbours , my parents, everyone of us running like a wild dog to grab the race from each other and showcase our potential to destroy our real self. Is this the race we are running?? I don’t want to. Some times I feel that we boddle our soul and explain our inefficiency to fulfill the real motives of life. That’s why after days, months, years of chase its is unfulfilling. This is not what life asks for?? This has destroyed our sensitive emotions and feelings.

I don’t want to be part of this chase. I want to explore the darkest, deepest, lonliest corners of the earth because that’s what our instinct is. But what we do – sit in our offices, home all your life trying to beat each other for nothing. Nature invites us in its lap to remain hale and hearty, to explore more and more. It invigorates a soul stirring freshness in us. We should break the shackles of bondage, money, things and form a connection with the nature. W. Macneile Dixononce once said “Nature like life, she strips men of their pretensions and vanities, exposes the weakness of the weak and the folly of the fool” — we should learn to be crusaders for the cause.

It is true, we are but faint-hearted crusaders, even the walkers,
nowadays, who undertake no persevering, never-ending enterprises. Our
expeditions are but tours, and come round again at evening to the old
hearth-side from which we set out. Half the walk is but retracing our
steps. We should go forth on the shortest walk, perchance, in the
spirit of undying adventure, never to return--prepared to send back
our embalmed hearts only as relics to our desolate kingdoms. If you are
ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife
and child and friends, and never see them again--if you have paid your
debts, and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and are a free
man--then you are ready for a walk.

A Cocktail of Crime,Ignorance and Bigotry

For a minute while watching the match between India vs Afghanistan I forgot which team I am supporting. While reason for passing such a antagonistic or hostile statement against my country recalls all the events that’s happening in my home state in my own country. Quite worthy of being called ‘shame for the nation’ which proclaims itself to be a liberal secular sovereign democratic country. I am talking about the shameful deeds of KHAP PANCHAYATS in Haryana which find themselves even above the law of the land. In case you don’t know about these khap panchayats then let me remind you I wouldn’t call them more than a group of orthodox conservative sick people who have been killing and making the life of poor miserable in the name of moral policing and justice. They are not less than any Talibans of Afghanistan who made their own laws and killed people in the name of traditions and customs. Which tradition or culture gives its people the license to kill others or socially boycott them just because they married a person from the same ghotra(sub caste) or from the same village. Isn’t that height of injustice prevailing in the society. Where are the law protectors??

Another incidents of killing of dalits have also been seen which is a disgrace to the nation. The so called JAAT community has to be held responsible for this societal and constitutional imbalance they have created. My opinion is that the atrocities on dalits has to be ascribed to the breakdown of Jajmani system in which there existed the traditional interdependence between the landowning families of peasants castes and the landless agricultural labourer families of dalits, after the advent of Green revolution in the 1970’s. Due to mechanization of agriculture and the consequent decrease in the demand for farm labours and also easy availability of cheaper migrant labour, land owning families of Jaats jettison their traditional labourers of dalits. This liberated the Dalits from the bondage of Jaats and they began to exercise their vote in parliamentary and assembly elections in an independent manner instead of remaining captive vote banks of the land owners. This lead to the emergence of conflict between the two caste and which finally showed up in the form of atrocities on schedule castes. This conflict further aggravated due to reservations in the memberships and chairpersonship of Gram Panchayats, Gram Samitis and Zila Parishads.

In last few years so many cases of honour killings have evolved. Over the last five years the Khap Panchayats , in the guise of maintain the honour and pride of the community, has issued most grotesque, barbarous and extremely disturbing diktats. Such Kangaroo Justice cannot be tolerated. Though no doubts these have existed from 600AD in India and there is lack of efficient judicial system in the country but that doesn’t allow them passing such disturbing dikats and commiting henious crimes of honour killings and social boycott. They advocate their judgements saying a girl cannot perform the dual role of daughter and a Bahu in the same village. Well everyone has the right to choose their marriage partners and who are they to point fingers on them. Even if you have objection against these acts , go to courts and get an ennactment in the Hindu Civil code.

No political party has the courage to take up the cases of honour killings and khap diktats. Moreover there is total absence of law enforcement. Its hard to digest that Haryana one of the most progressing state on economic front is witnessing such social degradation. Lets hope the menace of khap panchayats will be eradicated soon. These must be replaced by progressive panchayat bodies which are in tune with the time and ethos of the state. Untill and unless laws accurately define and punish these anachronism Khap panchayats will continue to brew a poisonous cocktail of crime, ignorance and bigotry.

HOW LONG WILL INDIA BLEED?

Well back to writing after a long gap and this time around I am starting a series called “INCREDIBLE INDIA” where I would be focusing on all the social evils and practices that are dismantling our country from the right path of progression and growth. Well it has to be started off with NAXALISM because situation is quite grave and the solution requires fundamental changes in the system.

I am a law abiding citizen and I feel sorrow for the state of nation who proclaims to be one of the most developing nations but can’t tackle the ever spreading evil of naxalism posing a threat to its internal security. It’s a slippery slope for sure. Haven’t we seen the effect of such avoidance/ignorance of naxalism in our neighboring state Nepal where Maoist became strong enough to uproot the governance of the country.

Besides the brilliance and brutality of the naxalite ambush sprung in Dantewada on April 6 that accounted for the single biggest one- day loss ever to security forces, the other two images remain in the aftermath of tragedy. Instead of saluting during cremation of CRPF jawans, police officers doing Namaste; and the policemen bunched in single-file patrol in the Dantewada forest. Both these actions demonstrate the civilian mindset of the police where military ethos is the answer.

I could remember the song ‘SAD but TRUE’ from metallica referring correctly to this situation of India’s internal security. It took the US just 46 days to overhaul its internal security system post 9/11. That country has since then not witnessed a single terrorist attack on its soil. In contrast, two years after the high level meeting in Delhi, India witnessed its arguably most daring and horrific carnage comprising over 10 brutal coordinated attacks by Pakistani terrorist which killed 173 and wounded 308 people.

The way 26/11 galvanised counter terrorism, Dantewada will, we hope chivvy counter-insurgency and anti-maoist strategies. Since black Tuesday a torrential downpour of lessons and ideas have flooded policymakers on strategies to cope and confront Maoists people war. At one end is civil society’s Arundhati Roy, calling Maoists Gandhians with guns while on the opposite side is the gun – wielding majority demanding their extermination. The biggest distortion about the Maoist challenge is that it is billed as a law and order problem falling under state jurisdiction when even the blind will acknowledge it is a full blown insurgency beyond the capacity of individual states.

How much more we are going to follow this “tolerance and wait and watch” policy considering the fact that Naxalite presence was confined to 50 districts out of 639 in 2001. By 2009 its geographical scope has expanded to 223 districts across 20 of India’s 28 states. In all, about 40000 sq km of our territory is currently under Naxalite’s sway justifying it being rightly called as ‘RED CORRIDOR”.
The flaws in India’s internal apparatus are considerable and the task is increasingly becoming daunting. India’s internal security problems arise from a combination of factors that include political and administrative mismanagement for which military and police solutions are seen as way out. The army and police at best can suppress or eliminate the terrorists. Common sense dictates that tackling terrorism, insurgency and political grievances is far more complicated and require a wider and deeper strategy which entails ‘employment of all means for the end’. The keyword here is ‘means’ which goes beyond employing military methods alone.

In the meantime the question arise whether we have the required instruments to combat naxalism?

CRPF is the designated force to tackle naxalism but is untrained to fight insurgency which requires combat skills or an infantry soldier. Massive expansion of CRPF to 216 battalions have diluted the quality of the force, raising another question of compromising quality over numbers? I think all the CPO’s have to be geared up and a proper coordination between army and state police force is required for giving a befitting reply to the naxalites.

Our strategic culture, which can be summed up in two oft repeated words –chalta hai and jugaad- is reflected in the way we treat our internal security. Lack of political will is responsible for insurgency dragging on and maoist gaining ascendancy. The prime minster in his second term owes it to the nation. Structures within the system should be made correct and adequate attention should be paid for removing deficiencies, then only it would be possible to address both the amelioration of the concerns of the Maoists and the violence unleashed by them. Remember, Our pontifications on “our rightful place in the world” will never get taken seriously unless we start taking ourselves seriously and change both our mindset and the way we think.
